ELEXALDE WILL HAVE A GREEK ACCENT

It takes part in an Erasmus project with another school from the hellenic town Katerini, with which there will be a cultural exchange.

Galdakao

The high school Elexalde from Galdakao has been one of the two schools from the Basque Country selected to carry out an Erasmus + project. In particular, it is going to strengthen ties with a secondary high school from the Greek town Katerini, a town approximately an hour from Thessaloniki. An initiative which responds to the title " Discover and share your identity mark" which will bring an exchange between Basque and hellenic students.
All started at the end of February,  when Elexalde decided to present an Erasmus + project." We see the necessity to internasionalise the school and the Latin teacher knew another school in Greece, so we started the contact" explains Gemma Gutiérrez one of the responsible of the project from Elexalde. Some weeks later, in August, they received the positive result,so they started the preparations.
It is a project which deals with some aspects related to the cultural, architectural, natural historical and maritime heritage about the hellenic and Basque cultures.
"As it is the Year of the European heritage, the main objective of this enriching project is to make  students aware about their own cultural heritage, discover Katerini heritage ( Greece) , reflect on both and share it with a respectful and tolerance mind" points out Mrs Gutierrez.
It will take place during two years, considering this school year 2019-2020 and it is aimed at students who are in 3 DBH.
First contacts

The first approaches or mobilities as they are named in the project, have materialised.
Gemma Gutierrez and her colleague Iratxe Cuñado travelled to Katerini in October " We went to train ourselves in the platform we will use to disseminate the project eTwinning , to know the Greek educational system and to know the people who will participate" explain " We have also exchanged Good Practice" adds Gemma Gutiérrez .In May hellenic teachers will return the visit " they will come to Elexalde , and then we will train in assessment tools and disseminate the project and they will also know our students" announces the Basque project initiatives.
For next school year, the two students' events led by students will take place,  which will be full of activities " In March 2020 15 students from Elexalde will go to Katerini where they will work different aspects of the project visiting places around the area related to the heritage" describes. Among them, for example the slopes of Mount Olympus.
Two months later, in May, the Greek students will visit us" We will have to organise the activities and we have already designed some of them " For example and considering the importance of rural sport, we will organise a sport competition. In Greece  the students from Galdakao will be challenged with ancient sports. Not without reason, those have the honour to host the first Olympic Games in the history.
There will be much more" In the natural heritage , we will bring them to Urdaibai, in the cultural we will visit Guggenheim and we will also go to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe or the Old Part of Bilbao. Precisely, in Bilbao we will  explain to them the transfomation
of the city through the river" describes Gemma Gutiérrez. We will also have time to talk about Greek and Basque mythology or taste the best food of each place." We will see Greek recipes and we will teach them Basque ones and we will organise a type of Masterchef" announces .They won't forget to dance, so the Basque dances and the Greek ones will be protagonists.
All of it has been possible due to the collaboration of some departments  of  Elexalde high school.   ." Apart from the English department, the main teachers from other subjects take also part: Art,Music, Basque, Language, Physical Education , History and Science" point out.
Precisely , Shakaspeare language has an important role in Erasmus +" Although we will learn some words in Greek and they will learn some words in Basque comunication between students will be in English, so it will be very important the improvement in this field"celebrate.

THE INTERNATIONAL BASQUE LANGUAGE DAY

As our next subject is the language as a cultural heritage and today we celebrate a special day for our language. We would like you to know a bit about our language:
The International Day of the Basque Language (one of the few surviving pre-Indo-European languages) is celebrated on December 3.
Basque Language Day was instituted in 1948 by the Society for Basque Studies. December 3 was chosen to honor Saint Francis Xavier, whose feast day is celebrated on this date. St. Francis Xavier was a Roman Catholic missionary from Navarre. According to legend, his last words before passing away were in Basque, as it was Xavier's mother tongue.
This year a project called Euskaraldia has been promoted by several associations dedicated to the promotion of Euskara ( Basque Language) that for 11 days will invite participants to take the role of Ahobizi or Belarriprest. Ahobizi are those people who speak in Basque with everyone who understands the language and speak to strangers using, at least, the first word in Basque. On the other hand, Belarriprest are those people who at least understand Basque and who invite the rest to address them in this language.
Elexalde bhi takes part in the celebrations of both the International Day of the Basque Language and Euskaraldia.

We will soon teach you a few words in Basque, every week oneon Instagram!!!!

OUR COORDINATOR INVITED AS SPEAKER IN ERASMUS+

On 28th November 2018 the presentation of 2019-20 Erasmus+ projects took place in Donosti.
The coordinator Gemma Gutierrez took part in it as speaker, answering some questions asked by Conchi Bergera  and Octavio Martinez ( from Sepie National Agency). The questions were related to the presentation of the project, the choice of partner, the reason of presenting the project, the implication of the school management staff, the impact of the project and its sustainability. She animated the attendants to participate in Erasmus+.
While she was talking, the project was on a screen so that the attendants could see what it is about. They were also informed where they could also consult the project in detail, in case they will be interested.
It has been a very good opportunity to disseminate the project to the Basque school community as well as share experiences which has been a big support to continue working and be of help for newcomers as we were last year.

UNFORGETABLE VISIT TO THE RADIO (27th November)

It has been the first time for all of us on the radio, so we have felt a mixture of emotion, anxiety and nervousness. Students are excited about it. We don't  know what to expect!

Today we have been interviewed on the radio" Bizkaia Irratia". The coordinator Gemma Gutierrez and three students Mei Torres, Ane Aguirre and Ibon Fernandez from the project Erasmus+ have been asked about the project " Discover and share your identity mark"

The first question has been about Erasmus+. They knew about Erasmus at university, but they didn't know that there was an Erasmus + at schools. The coordinator Gemma Gutiérrez has explained how two or more European schools decide to present a project and then, there is some criteria to decide which project will be chosen and how our project was selected and the decision of working on Basque and Greek heritage.

They have also wanted to know why our choice was Greece and Gemma has explained that the Latin teacher knew a school in Greece which was interested in taking part in it so we presented the project together.

They have also been interested about the mobilities the project includes. First, I have explained the teachers' mobilities and then the students' ones. I have described the purpose of our visit to Greece and what Greek teachers will do in our school. I have also pointed out the importance of students' implications in the project.

Besides, they have asked us about the activities we have been done and our students have explained to them the logo competition, the Basque sports activities and have insisted that we are at the beginning of the project and there will be more activities to be carried out.

They have wanted to know what our students knew about Katerini and Greece and they have told them that Katerini is in Mount Olympus and have said a few words they have learnt in Greek.

We have promised them that we will come back after the students' mobilities and at the  end of the project.

Here our students  comments on it.

"It has been very funny and I won't forget easily and a good opportunity to talk about the project"
"At the beginning I was very nervous but then I like it , it has been a good opporty to talk about the project"
"Very good experience and besides, I have said a few words in Greek"

The Conference opened with the enlightening talks of two representatives of the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (IKY), which is the National Agency for Erasmus+ projects.
We attended many interesting E-twinning projects and got inspired from them. It has been a very fruitful weekend that gave us ideas that will help us in the progress of our project.

Our project in the media

Our project appears in the mediasome local newspapers and radios are interested in it. This is only the beginning, because next Tuesday we will be interviewed in “Bizkaia Irratia” at 12:05 after the news. Don’t miss it!

Traditional Greek games!

This week we started practising the traditional Greek sports and games we will present to our Spanish partners. We had loads of fun playing three traditional greek playground games: "Mila", "Tzami" and "Mantili". We remembered those games played by kids in the streets and yards many many years ago and we realised how fun they can still be. You can see how much we enjoyed this activity in the photos that follow.

The Greek students and their expectations

The Greek students wrote down the expectation they have from the project.

READY FOR THE PRESS

We have prepared the presentation of our project for Galdakao town hall.
The presentation has been an approach to the project. We have started describing the project, the objectives, the contents, development and the different mobilities of it.
A complete description of it can be read in the eTwinning platform in the section journal diary.
We have also added the comments of both students from Katerini School (Greece) and Elexalde school. Here you can read what they have said:

The main reason why I have joined this programme is because I find it very intriguing as well as a great way not only to meet new people , cultures and countries but also to make me understand how special my country is and why I should respect it"
Chrysa  14 years old Katerini School ( Greece  )

"I am very happy about participating in this project. I hope it will be a new and interesting experience and I am willing to live adventures and improve my English.
I am also looking forward to making new friends and learning about a new culture, the Greek one"
Mai 14 years old I.E.S Elexalde School (Basque Country)

We expect we could have a great impact of dissemination in press so that our project could be followed by the largest possible number of people, here in our village and outside it.

Fifth day short-term joint staff training event

Our last day of training. We are sad we have to leave Katerini school and say goodbye to our hosts, all the school teachers who have warmly welcomed us. The headmaster has thanked us for all and we have also thanked him for his good reception.

We have organised the logo competition and decided the logo which will represent both schools. The logo which has been chosen has been Elexalde logo.

Then in the afternoon a quick visit to Thessaloniki, the capital of Macedonia region where Alejandro the Great and the great teacher Aristóteles wandered along their streets.

Our students will love it when they visit it, full of culture and visited by different villages.

We will say see you later to Katerini and Greece because our next visit will be next year when we  visit it with our students.

Fourth day short-term joint staff training event

Back down to work. We have gathered to finish with the eTwinning training related to the invitation of students in the platform and we have been trained in the use of flipped classroom methodology.

We have agreed the flipped classroom could be used by students to look at the videos produced by both schools at home or other kind if material.

In the last part of the training, we have looked at all the activities in detail and how to organise them and we have agreed the school which will be in charged of each one.

We have also looked through the schedule of the project, considering the chance of re-plan again if necessary.

Third day in short term joint staff training

Today we have been trained in eTwinning platform by Maria Dampratzidou. It has been very interesting and useful and we will explain the other members of the project how to use it when we go back to School.

We have also learns the use of some W2.0 tools to elaborate activities to be included in the project.
Finally, we have played a visit to the headquarters of the Secondary Education Board of Katerini and talked with the head of the Board Minister Kaztaridis.

Second day of short term joint staff training in Katerini

Tuesday 16th October (Local festivity) Due to the local festivity the two teachers from Elexalde and Katerini pedagogical team have visited some cultural sights as well as tasted some typical Greek food and participated in Greek dances as part of the project. These activities are included in the project and we consider them an important and necessary way to know the Greek heritage, so that it could be disseminated in Elexalde High School.

First short term joint staff training event

Monday, 15th October. 9.00 We arrive at Katerini School and we are welcomed by the headmaster and Katerini School staff.

10.00 Ready for work!! We start our meeting with a presentasion by Maria Dabra, the coordinator of the Greek school, on the town Katerini and its most representative parts. She also explains us the Greek educational system. Then we discuss  the details of the project management. We agree the consent report, talk about the documents needed  up to now and where we are going to keep all those documents.

We also see the schools' websites, the Blog we are going to share, twinspace and the instagram account as a way of dissemination of the project.

But as it is said "work and not play makes a Jack a dull Boy" so we stop for a break and we are delighted by some traditional Greek songs and dances performed by a group of students.

Going back to work, in the last part of the day, we talk about the short School curricular Elexalde BHI has and how the teachers from other subjects will participate in the project.

First short-term joint staff training in Katerini

The first short -term joint staff event was going to take place in September.
Katerini Secondary School and Elexalde High School decided to postpone it for October, because we agreed we needed more time to organise the training and we had already had the first contact with the project. We decided to carry out in October.

At the end, this meeting will take place from October 14th to October 20th.
The objective of this training is that as we both schools are newcomers, learning how eTwinning works is essential because it is a supporting tool to communicate and disseminate the project.
At the same time students, parents and School staff will be trained to know it and use it.
On the other hand, we will also train in the use of flipped classroom methodology to develop the project.

Didactic units and School curricula will also be discussed and design a model to follow.
All the documents related to project management will be assented.
Getting to know the Greek School, School staff, and students who participate in it will be in our agenda.

We are getting ready to travel!!!!

Sepie training days

The National Agency organised some training days in September 24th-25th to explain all the teachers whose K229 projects were selected the management of this project. All the essential information about the management of the project was given.

As our School is newcomer, it has been very useful to make contacts with another schools and to learn how to organise the project.
The required documents to fill up is a task which is totally new for us so these days have been productive and necessary.
